SECLCA was created to develop a connected and cohesive community of learning center professionals within the state of South Carolina. The first annual meeting was held June 13, 2014 in Columbia, SC, at the Inn at USC. At the second conference, held June 12, 2015 at Winthrop University, the group voted to expand membership to learning center professionals in the tri-state area of North/South Carolina and Georgia. The new name is the Southeastern College Learning Center Association (SECLCA).

Friday, February 17, 2023 • 1 p.m. | Using Microsoft Forms and Power Automate to Streamline Student Success TasksIn this webinar, participants will learn how to create a Microsoft Form in a shared workspace that triggers a Flow each time a new response is submitted. We will demonstrate how you can use these tools to automate repetitive tasks such as sending recommendation requests to faculty references when a student submits an application to become a tutor. After the demonstration, we will discuss potential applications of this tool for learning center administrators. The ultimate goal of this presentation is to help you learn how to use Power Automate to give you back time and avoid bottlenecks that occur when you need to manually initiate processes. Not only does it allow you to focus more on strategic work that makes a bigger impact on student success, automation can also provide a better experience for your students.

December 14, 2021 • 12 - 1 p.m. | Supporting Students with Executive Function Challenges
Executive Functioning Skills are processes related to academic success, such as organization, goal-setting, initiating and completing tasks, and monitoring progress. Executive function challenges (EFC’s) are chronic difficulties in executive skills and can make success in academics difficult. Many institutions struggle to address the needs of diverse learners. Presenters will discuss EFCs, how to identify/assess executive skills, and will unpack how the As-U-R program at Appalachian State University serves students with EFC’s and will make recommendations for supporting students.

Cultural humility, a term coined by physicians Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-Garcia in 1998, challenges the idea that we can ever reach cultural competence by insisting that true spaces of belonging and inclusion require a life-long commitment to critical self-reflection, power balancing, and institutional accountability. Joining explicit instruction about cultural humility and intersectionality (a widely-used concept first defined by Kimberle Crenshaw) with the vital methodology proposed by Tervalon and Murray-Garcia of reflection and collaboration with the community undergirds our tutor, honor council, and student worker training program at Meredith College. This webinar will define cultural humility and intersectionality, demonstrate a few activities from our experiential learning lesson plans for training, and discuss our on-going research and evaluation into the effectiveness of the training.
